In partnership with our Dutch colleagues from the International Child Development Initiatives in Leiden, from 2004 through 2007 the FDBF worked on a program on “Strengthening the Life Skills of Institutionalized children in Bulgaria”. The project was supported by the MATRA Program of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. |

Our main goal was to contribute to the successful reform in the child protection system in Bulgaria, by developing the potential of a wide circle of childcare professionals from three Bulgarian municipalities: Gabrovo, Sliven and Stara Zagora. In a series of seminars with trainers from Bulgaria, the Netherlands and Slovakia, they deepened their understanding of modern forms of care for children in institutions and children with disabilities. Thus the 28 core group trainees in turn trained over 180 of their colleagues, multiplying the overall benefit to the childcare system in Bulgaria.
Furthermore, within the framework of the project we set up an Internet Forum for childcare professionals, www.fdbfoundation.org/forum, which provides links between the different agencies responsible for the child protection system in Bulgaria and enables social workers to share experiences on concrete cases. The Forum is becoming ever more popular as a platform for a free and open discussion between childcare professionals.
Together with our Dutch colleagues, we also published two books on important child development issues: Stakeholders in Foster Care: An International Comparative Study and Newly Emerging Needs of Children.
