“Panitza” Civic Honor Prizes |

In order to build and expand on what was achieved by the Excellence in Journalism Awards (1994 – 2004), we founded the new Panitza Civic Honor Prizes. |

They are managed by the New Bulgarian University Board Fund, established with a donation by Dimitry Panitza. It aims to recognize individuals or civic organizations that set a worthy example of public conduct and who, through their actions, consistently and robustly assert the values of high moral integrity and decency, of a proactive and selfless civic position, public dialogue, humanism and tolerance, thus making a significant contribution toward a positive social change at the local and national level.
The winners of the Prize are awarded a special certificate, a medal and a monetary award in the amount of 10,000 BGN. The laureates of an Honorary Prize receive a special certificate, medal and a monetary award in the amount of 2,000 BGN.
The Prizes selection committee comprises highly respected writers, journalists, lawyers, politicians and academics: Valentin Chilikov, Chairman of the Association of Southeastern Municipalities; Boryana Dimitrova, Director of Alpha Research Agency; Georgi Gospodinov, writer; Hari Haralampiev, lawyer; Michail Ivanov, ethnic issues expert; Meglena Kuneva, EU Commissioner; Valery Zapryanov, Editor-in-Chief of Tema magazine; Dr. Zhelyu Zhelev, President of the Republic of Bulgaria (1990-1997); Prof. Ivaylo Znepolski, professor at Sofia University.

Laureates of the Prizes
The winner of the 2006 Prize was Malina Petrova – a film director, a member of the Public Committee for environmental protection in Rousse, the founder and director of the Tomorrow Foundation, a non-profit organization which assists the social integration of disadvantaged children and youth.
The winner of the 2007 Prize was Venelina Popova – a journalist, Bulgarian National Radio correspondent in Stara Zagora, a respected and courageous analyst, who takes a firm position against the corruption in politics, the altering of values in society, the manipulation of public opinion an the environment problems in Stara Zagora.
One of the winners of the 2007 Honorary Prize was Father Ivan Ivanov – Chair of the Church Board of Trustees in Novi Han, who managed to attract donations to reconstruct an old church building and built the St. Nikolay orphanage, which to date has assisted more than 250 people.
The other winner of the 2007 Honorary Prize was Captain Nikifor Gerchev – a legend of the Bulgarian sea rescue, who has saved for than 200 human lives and has initiated the establishment of the non-profit volunteer association “Bulsar”, which provides assistance to sea rescuers.
