Drug Prevention Program

In recent years, drug abuse has become one of the most serious social problems in Bulgaria; the number of addicted people has exceeded 100,000. It is even more alarming that the average age for youth starting to abuse heroin has fallen to 15-16 years of age and is even lower for marihuana and other ‘soft’ drugs.

Our drug prevention program was initiated in September 2001. It strives to give the public up-to-date knowledge on ways to recognize and deal with drug use and abuse. We conducted training sessions for teachers and parents and began the distribution a guide for parents and teachers “What We Should Know About Drugs”, prepared by a team of prominent professionals.

Our Guide has been recognized as the most popular source of information in the sphere of drug prevention in Bulgaria. With the generous support of foreign and corporate donors more than 120,000 copies have reached school boards, NGOs, parent anti-drug associations, municipalities, police units and individual citizens in over 80 towns around the country. The demand is huge and any help to respond to it is immensely appreciated!

As part of the same program we organized, together with the Italian Embassy in Sofia and the Bulgarian Agency for Youth and Sports, a conference on public attitudes concerning drug addiction and treatment. Our special guest was Monsignor Pietro Gelmini, founder of the world famous Comunita Incontro which maintains a broad network of support centers and therapeutic communities for drug abusers in more than 60 countries. The visit laid the beginning of a partnership, thanks to which 12 Bulgarian youths were enrolled in the therapeutic programs for drug abusers run by the Comunita Incontro in Italy.

Another result of our Drug Prevention Program was the publication of a FDBF-commissioned specialized sociological research, executed by Alpha Research agency and focused on the public attitudes towards the drug addictions and the therapeutic communities.
