We founded the Alliance for Children and Youth in 2002 in order to build on the experiences and achievements of our Street Children Program which began in 1993. The mission of the Alliance is to protect the rights of children and youths on the street in accordance with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and to contribute to ensuring decent conditions for these children’s overall development and re-integration into society. |

The Alliance implements its programs in the 16 Plus Youth Day Care Center created by the FDBF in 1999 in Sofia -- the first and still only center in the country that provides assistance to homeless unemployed youths aged 16 to 25 in their efforts to lead a dignified life.
The young men and women visiting the Center receive clothes and food, medical care and legal counseling, advocacy to protect their rights as well as mediation in resolving their problems. The Center works on the principle of voluntary decisions -- young people can come and go as they find appropriate, the Center being able to help about 30 youth per day. In its first years of operation its team has helped 70 school dropouts, 39 young parents of 54 children, 71 heroin-users and 40 youths using inhalation drugs, 19 young people with tuberculosis and more than 100 youths with other serious health problems; 44 young street workers were included in social rehabilitation programs and 90 youths who lacked proper identification have had new identity documents issued. At the same time the Center was able to find temporary employment for some 100 young men and women.
The programs of the 16 Plus Center are funded by national and international projects and with donations of individual and corporate donors. We owe special and deep gratitude to the Swiss Oak Foundation, the Italian Nando Peretti Foundation, the Tulip Foundation in the Netherlands and Bulgaria and the Open Society Institute in Sofia. Every cent spent helps save human lives!
We also continue to occasionally support the activities of the Faith, Hope and Love Center for Street Children, founded by us in 1995, and now run by the Municipality of Sofia. We strive to attract donations for their programs for additional education, for better medical care and for maintenance and renovation of the building of the Center. Thanks to the support of generous friends the children in the Faith, Hope and Love Center have been able to spend two unforgettable weeks in a mountain camp each summer.
