“Panitza” Excellence in Journalism Prizes

In order to promote higher standards, introduce humanistic values and encourage alternatives to sensationalism and poor reporting practices in Bulgarian print media, the FDBF Founder and Chairman J. D. Panitza established the Excellence in Journalism Prizes in 1994.

The “Panitza” Prizes were awarded annually to recognize exceptional achievements, which contributed to a higher intellectual, moral and professional level of Bulgarian journalism and also to the promotion of common humanistic values and tolerance in all fields of social and political life.

Annual competitions were held in three categories: General reporting, Investigative reporting and Commentary or analysis in the fields of economics, politics, science, history, culture, ecology, etc. The laureates of the “Panitza” Prizes were selected by a jury composed of leading Bulgarian journalists and writers.

From 1994 through 2004 the “Panitza” Excellence in Journalism Prizes gained recognition as the most prestigious journalistic awards in Bulgaria. In all some 900 authors participated in the annual contests with more than 1,700 submissions. In 2004, we decided to bring this competition to an end and published all winning articles in one volume - the most comprehensive and objective record of our success. We passed on the baton to the journalistic guild and redirected our efforts towards establishing the more embracing “Panitza” Civic Honor Prizes.
